Metal component coating: what to agree before ordering
Operating conditions, surface condition, colour and uncoated areas: a practical checklist for discussing a metal finishing enquiry.
Explain the operating environment
State whether the component will be used indoors or outdoors. Describe moisture exposure, appearance requirements and other known conditions. If a coating system is already specified in the documentation, attach those requirements to the enquiry.
Do not choose a coating solely from a photograph of a finished item. The same visible colour does not mean the same coating system or suitability for your application.
Show surface condition and dimensions
Send photos, drawings, dimensions and quantities. Describe any old coating, corrosion, contamination or previous processing. This is needed to agree preparation operations rather than only the application stage.
For complex products, show internal areas and places with restricted access. Feasibility for the component geometry and the full scope should be confirmed before handing over the items.
Identify colour and areas to leave uncoated
Describe the preferred colour, texture and appearance criteria. Include an agreed colour reference or sample if available. Viewing photographs on different screens does not replace agreement on the required finish.
Mark threads, mating surfaces, contact areas and other regions that must remain uncoated. Show these requirements on a drawing where possible instead of relying only on a verbal description.
Check the full proposal
Ask the proposal to identify preparation, application of the agreed material, treatment of specific areas, checking and packaging requirements. Clarify exclusions. Comparing only the label coating without a defined scope is not sufficient.
