What determines the cost of manufacturing metal structures?
Why weight or floor area alone is not a complete quotation, and how to compare materials, operations, finishing and the agreed scope.
Material and geometry are the starting point
A quotation begins with the metal grade, blank types, dimensions and number of components. Two structures with the same weight may require different amounts of work: one has a few simple components, while another has many connections and areas requiring processing.
A price per square metre or kilogram without a defined product therefore does not describe the full cost. Use the same drawings and requirements when comparing quotations.
Operations and order quantity
Preparation, cutting, forming, joining and agreed machining affect the proposal. Holes, complex contours, access to individual areas and checking requirements matter alongside overall dimensions. Be specific about which operations you want included rather than assuming that all possible work is covered.
State the quantity accurately. Preparation for a one-off product and a repeated batch is distributed differently; the terms of one order should not be applied to another without a fresh review.
Coating and drawing readiness
Agree surface preparation, coating type and areas that must remain untreated. Comparing an unfinished item with one that includes preparation and coating is not a like-for-like comparison, even if both proposals describe the same structure.
Incomplete drawings require clarification. If material, dimensions or quantity change, request an updated proposal because the initial calculation may no longer describe the intended order.
Request comparable proposals
Send the same requirements to each supplier and ask for included operations and exclusions. Check the schedule, change approval process, packaging and handover terms separately. Additional work should not be assumed to be included automatically.
