How to order metal structures: prepare a clear enquiry
Drawings, intended use, material, quantity and finishing requirements: a practical checklist for requesting and comparing manufacturing quotations.
Start with the purpose of the structure
Explain what the item does: a frame, support, base or another structural element. Describe its operating environment, the components it connects to and any requirements already established in your documentation. A reference photograph helps communicate the idea, but cannot replace dimensions or functional requirements.
For an initial enquiry, you do not need to guess the manufacturing process. Focus on the function, overall dimensions and known constraints.
Collect drawings and a component list
Attach the current drawings or a dimensioned sketch, a list of components and the quantity of each. Include a material specification and model if available. State the file revision so that the quotation is based on the intended version.
Show connection points, holes and interfaces that determine compatibility. Where information is missing, identify the questions that still need answering before production can begin.
Define finishing and the scope separately
State the material grade if specified and describe the coating requirements. Mark areas that must remain uncoated and surfaces that matter for subsequent assembly. A colour name alone is not a complete finishing specification.
Ask the proposal to identify the included operations: blank preparation, manufacturing, agreed processing, checking and packaging. This makes quotations comparable by scope rather than by the final total alone.
Agree timing and confirm the requirements
Include your preferred completion date and explain your priorities: cost, schedule or particular product requirements. Following clarification, check that the quotation refers to the correct drawings, quantity, material and scope.
