Welding metal structures: what to include in your enquiry
Drawings, materials, access to joints and inspection requirements: prepare a clear brief for a welded metal structure.
Show the complete structure and its purpose
Provide drawings of the complete product and individual joints. For a frame, support or building structure, the length of each part is not enough: describe how parts connect, the operating environment and any loads identified in the project documentation. If you have only a sketch, add dimensions and list the decisions still open.
Welding is one manufacturing operation, not the entire scope. Say whether blank preparation, holes, post-joining work or coating is needed so that the proposal can cover the actual result you expect.
Identify the material and joint requirements
State the metal grade, component thickness, number of repeated joints and known weld requirements. If an engineer has already specified these parameters, send the current drawing revision and specification without simplifying the joint symbols yourself.
Do not select a welding method solely from a photograph of a similar product. The process, edge preparation and assembly sequence need to be agreed against the actual geometry and technical requirements of your project.
Consider access, assembly and finishing
Mark areas that will be difficult to reach after assembly. Identify reference and mating surfaces, holes and regions with particular coating requirements. This information helps clarify the sequence of operations before manufacturing begins.
If the structure will be handed over in sections, state dimensional limits and the preferred way to group components. Transport, work at the site and final coating should not be assumed to be included automatically in a manufacturing quotation.
Agree inspection and the proposal scope
Highlight critical dimensions, requirements for checking connections and any records specified by your project. Acceptance criteria are more useful when agreed before production; a general request for quality does not replace a defined technical brief.
